Hey I got a little problem I could use some help with. There's this nice, little, teenage girl who's never read a book before, so I told her I'd get her one as a surprise gift. But uh, I'm drawin' up a blank. What kinda books do girls even read nowadays?

I'm not big on the whole book thing. So I guess that makes me more of a movie girl.

Movies? Can't say I've ever heard of those before.

Films? Flicks? Videos? With actors and actresses and occasionally a big musical number?

[Sigh. Wait, she gets it.] You'd be from one of those unmodern worlds, I guess.

Well we have somethin' like that I guess. The theatre does shows with actors and music, sometimes they even throw in special effects.

Un-modern? We have machines and stuff if that's what ya mean.

But those'd be real-life things, right? Like...a play?

Yup just like a play! There's a guild that specialises in them.

[herotypical]

Alright--well? Think play, but on a screen and not a stage. And recorded, not live. Like the video recordings on these journal things?

Those are movies. Movieish. Well, you get the drift.

[Pause.] You do get the drift, right?

Oh! I get it, I'd seen a few recordings but I didn't know they could be used to do somethin' like that.

Be kinda fun to be in a movie~

And thus we return full-circle to romantic comedies. If movies were available here I would totally say for something like Sleepless in Seattle for your bookless friend--can't go wrong with that one.

What would we need to watch movies? Aside from a screen and the recording.

VCR, DVD player, computer. Electricity. Stuff that's all in serious shortage around here.

A quick zap of lightning would be enough to start up a battery, and unless there's some kinda cap on magic artes then there's no reason why there couldn't be any electricity.

But the other stuff, 'side from the computer part, you lost me again.

They're things that play movies. I don't know how they do it, they just do. It's about as Greek to me as magic.

[Which begs the question, what's really left for her to understand?]

Ah figures as much. Oh well, I'll stick with gettin' her a book then.

You're sure she can read, right? What with this whole never-having-read-a-book thing.

Well she must be able too, after all I did communicate to her through written text to keep my identity secret.

Well I don't ever intend on tellin' her it was from me anyway. She's got her own friends here, she doesn't need an old man.
